A small coastal town near Tokyo, the present day. Three high-school friends decide to go somewhere during their last summer together. Machi (Tobita Momoko), who is undecided what she wants to do in the future, would like to see some whales, but the best place for that is California. Tomohiko (Katano Sui), who is going to art college, wants to visit Tokyo. Hotaru (Yamaguchi Sakiko), who thinks only of Tomohiko even though he's more interested in Machi, will go anywhere. Machi doesn't feel like visiting Tokyo - which she's never seen - but changes her mind after she receives a parcel of large peaches that evening from Komura Nanao (Sato Kentaro), a friend of her brother Teppei. Teppei left home six years ago, leaving Machi alone with her mother; so Machi sees the trip as a chance to track down her missing brother. After finally arriving in Tokyo, the trio first visit the National Museum of Nature & Science so Machi can look at some whales. They then go to the flat of Nanao, where they get their first surprise.
